Tech to find love ones after an Earthquake or natural disaster
How Technology Can Help You Stay Connected During a Natural Disaster
When an earthquake, hurricane, or other natural disaster strikes, communication can become one of the first major challenges. Cell towers may be damaged or overwhelmed, mobile networks can become congested, and families may suddenly find themselves unable to contact loved ones in affected areas.
Technology expert Juan Guevara explains how several digital tools can provide alternative ways to communicate and locate family members when traditional networks become unreliable.
During the segment, Guevara discusses emergency resources such as Red Cross Family Links, WhatsApp, Apple’s Find My ecosystem, and social media safety features. He also explains why sending short text messages or brief voice notes can be more effective than attempting traditional phone calls or video calls when cellular networks are congested.
Battery conservation is another critical part of emergency preparedness. When electricity is unavailable, minimizing video calls, reducing unnecessary phone usage, and having portable battery packs available can extend the amount of time a smartphone remains operational.
Guevara also examines the role of satellite Internet, particularly Starlink and the portable Starlink Mini. Because satellite connectivity does not depend entirely on traditional terrestrial Internet infrastructure, it can provide an important backup option in areas affected by hurricanes, earthquakes, severe storms, power outages, or limited cellular coverage.
The lesson extends beyond any single disaster: technology can be an essential emergency tool, but preparation needs to happen before the emergency begins. Understanding your communication options, keeping devices charged, having backup power available, and establishing a family emergency communication plan can make a significant difference when conventional networks fail.
